Student Spotlight: Sierra Stevens
Sierra Stevens is a senior majoring in Community Health Sciences. She is enrolled in the service-learning course Gerontology 431 for the Fall 2018 semester. In the course Stevens works to design, plan and host an event for the Senior Center in Cold Springs. She also participated in the Service-Learning Poster Showcase in Spring 2018. She has had great success in applying her course work to her career goals, and gives us her advice for all future service-learning students. Community Partner Spotlight: Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada
Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada (CCNN) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people trying to rise up out of poverty, and has been a long time partner with the university. CCNN, one of OSLCE's most popular partners, accepts a wide range of academic disciplines and provides valuable service-opportunities that meet diverse course objectives. Students are able to learn skills in project management, community engagement, marketing and immigration policy through their work with CCNN. Faculty SpotLight: Dr. Laura Crosswell
Dr. Laura Crosswell is an Assistant Professor of Health Communications in the Reynolds School of Journalism and currently teaches Applied Research in Health Communication. Last spring this course partnered with the UNR School of Medicine's Student Outreach Clinic (SOC) where students aimed to increase awareness, interest, and repeat ‘visits' among the SOC's target demographics, patients/under-served populations, community faculty/physicians and potential donors. Students determined how to best reach specific audiences and meet the communication objectives of the SOC through research-based insights and data-driven deliverables.
