This October, Romeo and Juliet promises to be the standout show, stirring deep emotion in every audience member.

The University’s College of Liberal Arts’ Department of Theatre and Dance is set to unveil its new production of "Romeo & Juliet" opening Oct. 10 at the Redfield Proscenium Theatre, located in the Church Fine Arts building.

This modern retelling of Shakespeare’s iconic love story explores what happens when youthful passion meets an unforgiving world. Directed by Assistant Professor Rosie Brownlow-Calkin, the production transports audiences to a contemporary American setting, where joy itself becomes an act of rebellion and the themes of oppression, conflict and tragedy resonate more powerfully than ever.

“Every production of Shakespeare needs to make its own decisions,” Brownlow-Calkin said. “For us, that meant emphasizing the ways society affects all the kids of the story, not just Romeo and Juliet.”

This production is a tragedy not just of Romeo and Juliet, but of all the young people in the play, whose lives are shaped and eventually shattered by the rigidity of the world around them. The show is recommended for audiences ages 10 and up and will be a powerful, emotionally compelling experience for viewers.

The production runs Oct. 10 through 19, with evening performances at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 10, 11, 17 and 18, as well as matinee showings at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 and 19. A talk-back with members of the creative team will follow the Saturday, Oct. 11 performance.

"Romeo & Juliet" marks another standout production in the University of Nevada, Reno theatre department’s 2025–2026 season. Known for its commitment to both innovation and tradition, the department continues to bring classical and contemporary works to Northern Nevada audiences, while supporting the growth and creativity of its student performers and crew.
