Trinity Alvarez will graduate in the Spring 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) through the College of Education and Human Development.

Alvarez is a first-generation student who began their educational journey by attaining an associate of science degree, then transferring to the University in the Fall of 2022 as a psychology major with a minor in HDFS. After taking more HDFS courses alongside their psychology major, Alvarez discovered their passion for working with children and counseling, thus embarking on their journey as an HDFS major.

As a student, Alvarez interned with Child Assault Prevention, a local non-profit organization offering skills and education to keep children safe.

Alvarez experienced significant growth both personally and professionally. "From this experience, I learned how to be adaptable and flexible when working with children," Alvarez said. What I took away most from this internship was my ability to fit multiple roles within my professional identity in engaging with children and communicating with counselors, all of which I care deeply about."

Jenna Dewar is a senior lecturer and assists students in facilitating their internship experiences.

Dewar explained, "From the moment I met Trinity, they were powerful advocates for themselves, and I am not surprised that they carved out such a wonderful academic and pre-professional journey for themselves. It has been a joy to watch, and I am immensely proud of them."

Reflecting on their academic journey, Alvarez offers advice for future incoming students, emphasizing the importance of reaching out and creating valuable friendships and connections. Guiding Alvarez through their college experience, is their friends. A circle of social support became essential to their growth here at the University.

Additionally, Alvarez explained the importance of giving yourself grace throughout your time in college. "My advice for future students, both in HDFS and other majors, would be to be kind to yourself. It is important to understand that in college, mistakes and difficulties are all a part of the journey."

After graduation, Alvarez has been offered a full-time job as a lead teacher at Sunflower Preschool, where they will be working in the Pandas classroom with the 2-3 year olds. Alvarez plans to stay with Sunflower Preschool for a long time after college.
