Staying strong with Nevada Dining’s wellness tips for a vibrant fall

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Lisa Carlson shares her wellness wisdom

As we transition into the brisk and colorful months of October and November, the impending flu season reminds us of the importance of prioritizing our health. Here at Nevada Dining, we are fortunate to have Lisa Carlson, our registered dietitian nutritionist, to guide us on this journey. She brings us essential advice for maintaining our well-being, and we are thrilled to share Lisa’s top October wellness tips.

The change of seasons is often accompanied by a bountiful harvest, and Lisa suggests we take full advantage of this. Apples, a fall favorite, are not only delicious but also rich in immune-boosting antioxidants. So take that apple-picking fall trip you’ve been planning and stock up on these delights!

Incorporating a variety of greens and vegetables into your diet is equally beneficial. The colors of your plate can be an indicator of the variety of vitamins and minerals your body receives, so next time you’re planning a meal, consider reaching for vibrant bell peppers, sweet potatoes, and a variety of leafy greens!

Did you know that sleep boosts immunity? That’s right - a good night's sleep is often underestimated when it comes to our well-being. The body undergoes significant healing and regeneration during rest, making it an essential component of staying healthy. Strive for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to keep your body in peak condition during this transitional season.

In addition to a nutritious diet and restful sleep, regular exercise should never be neglected. Whether it's a yoga session at the Fitness Center, a jog, or a walk around campus, staying active enhances the circulation of immune cells in your body. Think of it as your body's security team ready to respond to any potential threats.

Stress and mental well-being are closely intertwined with your physical health. High levels of stress can weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to colds and flu. To counter this, practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of the autumn season.

Finally, remember that your campus provides an array of resources to support your wellness journey like the Student Health Center.

Nevada Dining is committed to offering nutritious and delicious meals to meet your dietary needs. If you have questions or concerns, our team is here to assist you at every step of the way.

Stay healthy and vibrant, Wolf Pack!

Yours in health and happiness,
