Power System Research Lab

Partner with us!

Located in the William Pennington Engineering Building on the University of Nevada, Reno, campus, the Power System Research Lab is the only institution in Nevada with a cyber-physical power system (CPPS) digital and hardware-in-the-loop testbed. Organizations can utilize the Power System Research Lab to:

  • advance clean energy research and testing using cost-effective, safe and practical digital simulation methods;
  • eliminate the need to invest in expensive grid development software and hardware;
  • access a digital modeling environment with hands-on experiences for safe testing which eliminates field testing and deployment risks.

The Power System Research Lab provides access to its technologies on a pay-per-use basis.

Value proposition for users

  • Cybersecurity: Our facility allows users to study cyber-incidents on the grid.
  • Grid sensors: Our facility provides the ability to test new grid-sensing technologies and the development of new methods and software for maximizing value proposition of sensors data.
  • Substation automation technologies: Our facility provides the capability to physically test grid automation systems for reliable use and training purposes.
  • Protection and controllers: Modeling and testing protection devices and controllers will help users to evaluate, choose and learn about emerging technologies, including power electronic-based technologies.
