University Housing Accommodation Policy and Procedure

Students who need to request a disability-related accommodation for on-campus housing will follow the same housing application process as all students applying to live on campus.

To begin, start your Residential Life and Services housing application.

  • Confirm that you will be requesting DRC Accommodations for Housing in your app.
  • It is strongly advised that Housing Applications for Fall move in are submitted prior to the Residential Life and Housing Priority Deadline of February 1 each year.
  • Housing Accommodations must be requested with the DRC and Residential Life and Services every Academic Year when a student applies for campus housing.

At the same time, complete your Disability Resource Center housing application.

All students requesting a Housing Accommodation will need to complete an Intake appointment with a Coordinator at the DRC.  During this meeting, a DRC Coordinator will talk with you about the challenges you experience in housing related to your disability and potential reasonable accommodations to address the barriers being reported.

All students are encouraged to meet with a DRC Coordinator for their Intake appointment, even if documentation is not yet available. Your DRC Coordinator can discuss specific documentation-related needs during your appointment.

Providing third-party documentation from a qualified provider is strongly recommended and, in some cases, may be necessary as part of the review process of your Housing Accommodation Request. The DRC can assist you in requesting appropriate documentation from your provider if needed.

Documentation requirements

  • Be signed by a qualified and licensed medical or mental health professional who is familiar with your diagnosis and treatment.
  • Must list a diagnosis, duration of diagnosis (chronic, temporary, progressive, etc.), and the functional limitation(s) caused by the diagnosis(es) that would impact your ability to live in the standard campus living arrangement.

Preferred Deadlines: Students should submit requests for Housing Accommodations no later than:

  • April 1 for Fall move-in
  • November 15 for Spring move-in

Requests for Housing Accommodations submitted after the above preferred deadlines will be reviewed on a continuous basis; however, Housing Accommodations are facilitated based on availability, and a student may be placed on a waitlist until a space meeting their approved accommodation request becomes available.

Housing Accommodation requests can take up to 6 weeks to fully review, starting from the date of your application. This timeframe does not include any time needed by the student to respond to inquiries from the DRC and/or Residential Life and Housing for additional information related to their request.

There may be requests that require more time than this initial estimate, depending on specific needs.
