How this business-minded finance major invests in her future through networking and opportunities at the University of Nevada, Reno

Lauren Moses does it all. After moving from Las Vegas to attend the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business and the Honors College, she has fully embraced the many opportunities available to her. From living on campus and building friendships through clubs and organizations like the Business Student Council to working as a student employee with the College of Business, Moses has immersed herself in campus life. Along the way, she has also built a strong network of professors, peers and guest presenters—setting herself up for success as a finance major.

Here, Moses outlines how she’s found her Pack at Nevada.

Tell us a bit about where you’re from and how you decided to attend the University of Nevada, Reno.

I am originally from Wichita, Kansas, though I moved to Las Vegas before middle school. During high school, I visited the University of Nevada, Reno through a Nevada-Bound tour and loved the campus as well as everyone I met. It seemed like a place where I could see myself thriving. I also heard they had a great business college, which was a plus for me.

What are you studying?

I am studying finance, with a minor in economic policy and risk & insurance. I’m also in the Honors College and I am part of the Business Student Council. I am graduating in May of 2027.

What is it like to study at the College of Business and in the Honors College?

I love the community of peers and educators that really just want to see you grow and find out what you want to do after college. There are so many resources and opportunities within the College of Business to learn, connect and explore every part of business.

I recently joined the Honors College. It is nice because they work with your goals and extracurriculars to help you get whichever honors level you choose. I cannot say much as to how it has impacted my experience because I am so new to it, but I can tell that it will be another thing that pushes me towards a better future!

Are there any professors or mentors you’ve had who have had a positive impact on your experience?

All of my professors have had a big impact on me. Every class experience and professor gave me a fresh perspective on the world of business, and the different ways my future could grow.

What type of job do you hope to start after graduation?

While I'm not sure of the exact job I would like, I know I would love to work in a finance position where I am interacting with customers and others often. Maybe in sales or a leadership position. The end goal is to start my own business, but I am definitely still a ways away from that.

You’re also a student worker in the College of Business. Can you share a bit about how you got that position?

It was actually through my business 101 professor. I asked to be her teaching assistant (TA), but she did not need any more at that time, however, she knew that there was an opening in marketing. She connected me to Pam, who is now my boss. I went through the typical application and interview process and have been here for over a year now!

Most of my work is general marketing for the College of Business. I do it all from advertising events to highlighting opportunities within the college. I also get to attend all of our career and company events, like Wolf Pack Shadow, that are meant to help students on their college journey. These things are open to all students, but I get to experience them uniquely from both the student and the employee side. The Wolf Pack Shadow events are held by the Career and Corporate Outreach Center. Every participating company styles its visit a bit differently, though we usually get to meet employees in different roles, hear about their day-to-day life and get a tour of the place itself. We've gotten the chance to visit lots of great places; Tesla, Panasonic, Visit Reno-Tahoe, Elemental LED, Caesar's Entertainment and more. We always have lunch at the end of the visit and are given plenty of time to network with the employees.

As part of my role, I get to photograph and record nearly everything that the College of Business does. The job has taught me primarily how to network and how to analyze efficiency and make improvements.

In addition to your position as a student worker, what other means are helping offset the costs of going to college? Are you receiving any scholarships?

I am grateful to have scholarships through the Pack Promise+ scholarship. That covers all of my tuition and books, which I received after filling in the FAFSA application.

Coming to Reno from a different city can be intimidating for some folks. How has it been making new friends here?

I have made great friends on campus, some through living in the dorms my freshman year. I lived in Argenta Hall, which is definitely a social dorm, and some of my closest friends came from that experience. It was also right by all of my classes, and the dining hall was at the bottom floor. It was a convenient place to be.

Most of my current friends I have met through the College of Business in class, at work and in the Business Student Council.

Currently, I’m a member of the Business Student Council, but I am running for the Social Chair this month! The council's goal is to get business students more involved and connected. I love being a part of a group of people who all have high aspirations for themselves and are focused on being involved. The experience has given me even more opportunities to grow, along with a network of great people and friends.

What do you like about living in Reno and Northern Nevada?

I love Reno and Northern Nevada for the fact that I can be at this amazing college while also being surrounded by some of the best nature in the country. There is so much to do and see in this area, there's never a dull moment. Lake Tahoe is beautiful and I love that all I need is a free weekend to experience it!

Do you have any advice for students considering coming to the University of Nevada?

My one piece of advice to students considering the University of Nevada would be to just make the jump. This University is so welcoming, and there truly is a place for everybody here.
