This year’s National Preparedness Month’s theme, Preparedness Starts at Home, is a reminder that readiness begins with small, practical actions. Whether facing a natural disaster, power outage or unexpected emergency, planning ahead helps protect yourself and support others when it is safe to do so.

University Organizational Resilience – Northern Command (UOR-NC) is here to help you get started at home, at work and in our learning spaces.

Three quick wins to do this week

Make a plan.

Decide how you will communicate with family, roommates or coworkers during an emergency. Choose meeting points and make sure everyone knows the plan.

Build a kit.

Stock water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, first-aid supplies and copies of important documents.

Stay informed.

Update your emergency contacts in Workday, PeopleSoft or Canvas, and download the University’s campus safety app, SafePack, which gives fast access to safety tools and resources on your phone.

What is SafePack and why it helps

SafePack puts campus safety resources in one place. It includes emergency contacts, reporting tools, campus maps, a personal safety toolbox with a flashlight and alarm, and access to the University’s blue-light network. It is free on iOS and Android.

New: UOR-NC Preparedness Training Series (20-minute Zoom sessions)

This fall, UOR-NC will launch a monthly micro-training series to help build a culture of readiness across our community. Each session is short, practical and designed to fit into busy schedules.

  • When: Third Wednesday of each month, from 11–11:20 a.m.
  • Where: Zoom
  • Frequency: Monthly
  • Registration: Registration via Google Docs for October, November and December (max 30 participants). A Zoom link will be sent upon registration.

Get started today: a 5-item checklist

  1. Save emergency contacts (home and work) in your phone.
  2. Add SafePack to your home screen and explore the features you might need in a hurry.
  3. Pick two meeting points: one near home, one outside your neighborhood.
  4. Assemble or refresh your kit. Set a calendar reminder to check it every six months.
  5. Plan to join the first training session and invite a colleague or classmate to attend with you.
