The College of Business at the University of Nevada, Reno has launched a new Personal Financial Planning program designed to prepare students for careers in one of today’s fastest-growing fields. Approved by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board), the program fulfills the educational requirements needed to sit for the CFP® Certification Exam.

The fully online program offers six courses that can be completed in as little as 12 months. Its asynchronous format allows students to complete coursework on their own schedule, making it accessible for working professionals or those pursuing continuing education.

“Our curriculum covers all seven core areas of financial planning, so students gain comprehensive, real-world knowledge,” said Serhat Yildiz, associate professor of finance and director of the program.

The launch comes at a time when demand for skilled financial planners is on the rise. The profession is projected to grow faster than average over the next decade, with experienced planners earning six-figure salaries and serving an increasingly diverse range of clients. Growing financial complexity has contributed to a steady rise in demand for trained financial planners.

“This program expands the Finance department’s offerings in a way that directly responds to industry needs,” said Qun Wu, chair of the finance department. “It builds on our established strengths in finance and aligns our curriculum with the real-world standards of the CFP Board. Students gain applied financial planning skills that integrate seamlessly with the theory taught across our finance programs.”

Students who complete the program will gain expertise in investment fundamentals, tax planning, retirement and estate planning, and risk management, all while working toward a credential that carries national recognition. With its flexible structure, the program opens the door for learners across Nevada and beyond to build rewarding careers helping others achieve financial well-being.

“This program reflects our commitment to offering relevant, high-quality education that prepares students for meaningful careers,” said Greg Mosier, dean of the College of Business. “By providing a flexible pathway to certification, we’re helping students take the next step toward professional success.”
