Since opening to the public in 2011, The Discovery has solidified its place in our region as the home for informal science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning. Through hands-on galleries and exhibitions, and a robust array of educational programs, The Discovery connects learners of all ages with opportunities to explore a wide variety of ever-changing topics, all designed to inspire curiosity and further investigation.

Originally founded as a children’s museum, The Discovery has evolved into a science center serving audiences far beyond families with young children. This transformation is driven by the knowledge that the museum’s potential to make a larger impact in our region requires serving a much broader demographic. By becoming Northern Nevada’s hub for fun, hands-on science exploration for all ages, The Discovery augments our community’s educational offerings and plays a critical role in the cultural and economic growth of our community.

“The Discovery is excited to partner with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Nevada, Reno to provide an opportunity for OLLI members to benefit from everything the museum has to offer,” said Patrick Turner, chief advancement officer at The Discovery. “Inspiring lifelong learners is at the core of The Discovery’s mission.”

OLLI at the University of Nevada, Reno is part of the distinguished network of 125 OLLIs established across all 50 states and the District of Columbia since 2001. The institute was founded in 2007, originally known as Elder College under the University’s Extended Studies program. Today, it operates under the Sanford Center for Aging at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine.

The organization aims to enrich the lives of individuals aged 50 and older by providing a diverse array of educational programs, special and social events, outdoor activities, and opportunities for community engagement. OLLI is a diverse, member-driven community of active, inquisitive individuals committed to exploring new ideas and interests in a welcoming environment — free from tests and grades.

“This collaboration with The Discovery truly reflects what lifelong learning is all about, said Dolores Ward Cox, executive director of OLLI at the University of Nevada, Reno. It’s about fostering curiosity that connects people across generations — creating intergenerational experiences where learning, exploration, and discovery are shared and celebrated by all ages.”
