For students and faculty at the Reynolds School of Journalism, the spring 2024 semester was one of exciting new beginnings and great achievement. The semester began with Gi Yun stepping into the role of dean in January. The semester was full of accomplishments from Reynolds School students including a great campaign in the National Student Advertising Competition to new Hearst Award winners and a Webby nomination. Welcome to the Spring 2024 Semester in Review! I’m Dean Yun.

It’s been my pleasure to step into the role of Dean as of January 1st of this semester. Our students and faculty made amazing achievements this semester, and we also have some exciting programs launching, like a new sports media emphasis in the fall and a new drone class in summer. Let’s look back!

We started the semester by thanking former Dean Al Stavitsky for over 12 years of service as dean with a party in the atrium.

In February we posthumously awarded the Frank McCulloch Award for Courage in Journalism to Jeff German, which was accepted on his behalf by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The legal team from the Review-Journal spoke at our First Amendment Forum about their winning state supreme court case that upheld shield laws, even after a reporter has passed away.

Three outstanding students took home Hearst awards for their reporting in the audio and multimedia categories. Congratulations to Zoe Malen, Sophia Holm and Madison Lloyd.

Our Bateman team created a successful campaign for Cultures Magazine, and our IMC team won second place in the district competition for their campaign for Procter and Gamble, taking home a shiny new trophy!

We welcomed Steve Waldman, founder of Rebuild Local News and Report for America, to deliver the 59th annual Scripps lecture about the future of local newsrooms.

We celebrated our students and faculty at the annual Savitt Awards Banquet.

And we finished off the semester by graduating 63 bright and motivated students. They'll make us proud in whatever they do next!
