Campus highlights diversity and inclusion events for week of Sept. 5-8

A number of discussions and events on tap this week to keep campus updated on recent race and free speech developments

The University is holding several events this week, Sept. 5-8, in an effort to keep the campus informed and up-to-date regarding the latest developments related to creating a more diverse and inclusive campus.  

They include:  

The Graduate Student Association is hosting a graduate student dialogue on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. in Joe Crowley Student Union Ballroom C in order to discuss the recent events around the country.  

On Wednesday, Sept. 6 ASUN is hosting its "Learning, Discovery and Engagement" speaker series featuring free speech advocate Lauren Cooley at 7 p.m. in the Glick Ballrooms of the JCSU.

On Thursday, Sept. 7, "Charlottesville: A Conversation with History Professors" will be held in the Wells Fargo Auditorium in the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center at 6 p.m. University history professors will discuss the history, causes and implications of the recent racism and violence in Charlottesville.

Integrated Implicit Bias Search Committee training started on Aug. 22 and will continue weekly through mid-November. Faculty sign-ups and more information about this semester's training sessions is available.

The Center. Every Student. Every Story. hosted the "CenterFest" event on Aug. 31 and is developing topics for this semester's Diversity Dialogues. More information will be made available soon.  

As of Tuesday, Sept. 5, the faculty-generated website, "unrfacultyagainstracism.net," had gathered 639 signatures of faculty in support of a letter from faculty to students "unequivocally" rejecting white supremacy and racism and pledging the faculty's support to the students in a commitment "to creating a campus where we all can learn."
