Nevada Seismological Laboratory

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory (NSL) is a research and public service unit of the University of Nevada, Reno. The Laboratory has a primary responsibility to monitor earthquake activity throughout Nevada and in bordering regions.

The laboratory operates a regional seismic network with hundreds of seismometers, which is used to report the sizes, frequencies of occurrence, locations and source characteristics of earthquakes in the region. In addition to monitoring earthquakes, the NSL operates a network of cameras used for the early detection of wildfires and to provide situational awareness for first responders. The NSL performs research related to seismic hazard in Nevada and serves as a resource for the public on matters related to regional earthquake activity and multi-hazard risks. NSL faculty teach geoscience undergraduate courses, and they advise graduate students and teach graduate-level courses.
