The WW Norton Student Writing Award
With generous funding from WW Norton, the publisher of the Core Writing textbook, Everyone's an Author, the Core Writing Program awards nine prizes each academic year.
- Three awardees for ENG 100I student reflective writing receive $100 each
- Three awardees for ENG 101/113 student reflective writing receive $100 each
- Three awardees for ENG 102/104/114 student reflective writing receive $100 each
Students are limited to one award per academic year. Submissions are due by April 15 by 5 p.m.
Eligibility
Eligible students are
- in good standing with the University
- enrolled in ENG Core Writing courses (ENG 100I; ENG 101/ENG 113; and ENG 102/104/114) with an assigned WW Norton text, such as Everyone's an Author, during the current academic year.
Only submissions responding to the reflective Reflective Writing Prompt (below) are considered.
Submission
We invite eligible students (or their instructors) to submit a Reflective Writing Entry of 200-250 words as a docx or PDF by April 15 at 5 p.m.
Reflective Writing Prompt: Using examples from your Core Writing course experience, how have you gained confidence in your academic writing? What role did feedback from others, such as your instructor or your peers, help you to reconsider your prior knowledge about writing and construct new knowledge about writing?

- your first and last name
- your NSHE ID
- the course (i.e., ENG 102)
- course instructor
- your Reflective Writing Entry attached as a docx or PDF
Selection process
The English Department's Award Committee selects the winning Reflective Writing Entries.
They evaluate eligible Reflective Writing Entries based on
- addressing the Reflective Writing Prompt
- synthesizing writing experience within reconsidering and constructing knowledge
- exhibiting rhetorical style with audience awareness, effective and ethical use of textual evidence, and accurate use of genre convictions
The Award Committee's selections are final. Awards are presented at the English Department Awards Ceremony each spring semester.
