Core Writing program

The Core Writing Program at the University of Nevada, Reno offers a series of first-year writing courses designed to meet the needs of incoming students.

Welcome to the Core Writing Program at the University of Nevada, Reno. We offer a variety of courses designed to meet different students’ needs as they adjust to the writing demands of college and beyond. Our classes emphasize rhetorical flexibility, giving students the knowledge and experience to tailor their writing to different audiences and different contexts. Our first semester courses, English 100I, 101 and 113 have similar curricula but are tailored for students seeking different types of support to help them transition to college. These courses build foundational knowledge in understanding and analyzing different rhetorical contexts for writing and ask students to transform their writing into different genres for different audiences. Our second semester offerings, English 102 and 114, build on knowledge gained in the earlier courses and promote prolonged engagement with a research topic, while also increasing the emphasis on multimodal communication. Read more about our courses on the core writing course descriptions page.
