Information on How to Request 100% Remote Instruction

July 17, 2020

This message was sent to undergraduate students at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Dear Nevada Students,

While we want to encourage students, especially those new to the University, to be on campus and engage directly with the Wolf Pack community, we understand that personal circumstances resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic may make it difficult or impossible for some students to attend classes in-person. We also realize that these circumstances can be of a sensitive and private nature.

Therefore, we have developed a process by which you can apply to attend all of your courses remotely without having to disclose the reason for the request. Before being granted permission, you will be required to meet with your academic advisor to ensure that your schedule allows for 100% remote course access. Your advisor will also discuss the stipulations associated with your request to study remotely.

These stipulations include the following:

  • Students need to be aware that not all classes with be available remotely.
  • Remote students will be responsible for obtaining the necessary computer technology and internet access to attend their courses remotely.
  • Students choosing remote instruction will be required to pay the same fees paid by students attending courses on campus.
  • Students will be responsible for informing their instructors that they have been granted permission to attend their courses remotely.
  • Students must also maintain strong, clear and current lines of communication with their instructors throughout the semester.

While the process by which students may request 100% remote instruction has been developed, we will not be able to implement it until early August when we will have a complete list of classes that will be available for remote participation. Once our plans have been finalized, you will be notified in early August with instructions on how to submit a request for 100% remote instruction. Until then, please do not contact your academic advisor with a request, because they will not have all the information needed to accurately review your schedule. We have attached a FAQ sheet to this message to help address your questions. If you need further information, please contact Vice Provost David Shintani at shintani@unr.edu. I hope you are all having a safe and enjoyable summer break.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kevin Carman
Executive Vice President and Provost
