Careers in Data Analytics

A "data scientist" is called "The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century" because the work is in high demand yet there are relatively few people with the right skills to do the job.  As organizations collect and store increasingly large sets of data (bigger and bigger sets of "big" data) they need people able to understand and make sense out of that data.  So, what exactly does a data scientist do?  It depends on the objectives of the organization, but a data scientist does some or all of the following activities:

  1. Determines how data might be used to support one or more objectives of the organization.
  2. Identifies what data should be collected.
  3. Collects the data.
  4. Organizes the data in a way that is useful for analysis.
  5. Analyzes the data using statistical methods.
  6. Draws information and important insights from the analysis.
  7. Creates visualization methods based on the analysis that helps other people understand the information and insights from the analysis.

Both profit and non-profit organizations are seeking people who understand how to work with data.  For example, big data is transforming health care by helping health care professionals understand in depth how different people respond to treatment.  Not only has big data improved health care treatment, but it has also helped organizations control costs
But people who understand how to collect, organize, store, and make the results understand are few and far between.  A study by McKinsey reported in Bloomberg Business Week projects that there will be significant gap in the number of people able to do data analytic work as compared to the demand by 2018.  The data analytic track of the MSIS program will help fill that gap by providing you with the skills you need to succeed as a data scientist/data analyst.
