In May 2008, the idea to start an alumni chapter for Asian Pacific Islanders was proposed to a small group of graduates and soon-to-be graduates. The Native American Alumni Chapter was established in the early 1990's. The purpose of the chapter is to bring together the Native American community, Alumni and University by sharing the American Indian culture and heritage on the University campus through traditional events and athletic activities. For the past seven years, the Chapter has coordinated the Mr. & Miss University of Nevada Reno Pow Wow for children ages 3-18 years of age. The chapter believes that education is the key to success for native communities and they encourage youth and their families to experience the University though educational conferences and University sponsored events throughout the year. The Chapter also provides Native American/ Alaska Native students scholarships and support while attending the University. Through our funding efforts the chapter was able to increase our scholarships to $1,000. On behalf of the Native American Alumni Chapter, we would like to express our gratitude to the University and the Alumni Association for this prestigious award and recognition of our contributions to the University of Nevada and the alumni community.
This Chapter is for all Native American graduates of the University of Nevada, Native American graduates of other institutions of higher education and friends of the Chapter.
The Native American Alumni Chapter fund raises throughout the year to provide scholarships to a Nevada, tribally enrolled student. Each scholarship recipient is awarded $1,000 toward school fees and books.
