Engaging all literacy educators

Applications are now available for an interactive institute on the Science of Reading

This University of Nevada, Reno Summer Literacy Institute offers Nevada Pre-K through Grade 12 literacy educators free access to three days of expert-level professional learning supported by evidence-based research. Educators will be provided with dedicated time and coaching to apply the pillars of the Science of Reading to their classrooms and schools. Travel costs will be reimbursed up to $450 for participants traveling beyond 50 miles. Three nights of lodging at the institute hotel is covered by the grant.

The Institute provides:

  • Blocks of dedicated learning time focused on each of the five primary elements of reading: phonemic awareness/phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Nationally renowned literacy experts sharing their expertise in both the theory and application of the Science of Reading.
  • Engaging panel sessions that include both national and local literacy experts.
  • Nevada Department of Education Professional Learning Hours Certificate (20 hours)

Implementation Work Sessions Provide:

  • Daily embedded work sessions for educators to review and reflect on their knowledge and understanding of each pillar’s content.
  • A final block of time aimed at “putting it all together” where participants create a plan of action for implementing the strategies that they have learned.
  • A corresponding year-long online Institute Canvas Course for accessing the Science of Reading content before, during, and after the institute, communicating with colleagues throughout the state, and creating local professional learning opportunities.

Join your fellow Nevada colleagues by becoming part of a unique statewide learning opportunity aimed at integrating the Science of Reading into your daily practice.

Take the time to learn with your peers from across the state (including both urban and rural areas) and across all grade levels.
