Psychological Services Center

About the Psychological Services Center

The Psychological Services Center is an outpatient mental health clinic within the University of Nevada, Reno psychology department. The clinic provides training for doctoral students in the University's clinical psychology program, as well as a low-cost treatment option for adults living in Northern Nevada.

The center offers brief or long-term individual, group and couples therapy to address a wide variety of psychological problems, relationship issues and personal concerns. Clients work collaboratively with psychology trainees and the supervising clinical faculty to resolve emotional/behavioral problems and reach personal goals. All assistance and records are confidential, except as excluded by law.

The Psychological Services Center is not an emergency or urgent care facility but rather an outpatient-training clinic. If you need emergency care, you must call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

The clinicians are graduate students in the doctoral training program and are supervised by full-time members of the clinical psychology faculty. The therapists and supervisors represent a range of skills and interests, and whenever possible will be matched to a client's interests and needs.

The Psychological Services Center does not discriminate against any person on the basis of race, culture, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, religion, socioeconomic status, veteran status or age. The staff values the differences and similarities among people, and respect the multiple identities of clients and communities with whom they work. The services provided reflect the highest standards of professional ethics and competence.

COVID-19 updated information

To reduce the potential spread of COVID-19 in our community, therapists, clients, and administrative staff at the PSC are requested to adopt the precautions listed below. Thank you in advance for abiding by these guidelines and helping keep our local community healthy!

University Coronavirus updated information

1) General Precautions

Follow the general precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
    • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then immediately throw the tissue in the trash. Do not allow the tissue to touch other surfaces.
    • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. The PSC will have hand sanitizers in the waiting room, front office, and all the therapy rooms.
    • Remind child clients to wash their hands after going to the bathroom and ask them if they washed their hands when they came out. Send them back if they did not do so.
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces (e.g., keyboards, hard surfaces including furniture, tables, and doorknobs) using a disinfectant cleaning spray or wipe.
    • Check email frequently and respond promptly, as the recommended precautions and containment guidelines pertaining to COVID-19 may change rapidly.

2) Coming to the Psychological Services Center for Appointments

  • Wash your hands before coming into the PSC. We would appreciate it if you would thoroughly wash your (and any family members') hands before you enter the clinic (bathrooms available down the hall).
  • Wear a  face covering to your appointment. In response to COVID-19, and in alignment with State of Nevada Governor Executive Orders, Roadmap to Recovery for Nevada plans, Nevada System of Higher Education directives, the University of Nevada President directives, and local, state, and national health official guidelines face coverings are required at all times while on campus. A “face covering” is defined as a “covering that fully covers a person’s nose and mouth, including without limitation, cloth face mask, surgical mask, towels, scarves, and bandanas” (State of Nevada Emergency Directive 024).
  • Clients are asked to come to their visit alone, all guests will be asked to wait in the car unless they are needed to assist the client
  • We strongly encourage you to stay home if you are experiencing ANY cold or flu-like symptoms.  According to the CDC, COVID-19 symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Symptoms are estimated to appear 2-14 days after exposure.  As it is difficult to differentiate COVID-19 symptoms from other more minor conditions when someone first becomes ill (and reported illnesses have ranged from mild to severe), please do not attend a session at the PSC if you are experiencing any cold or flu-like symptoms. Moreover, please call your primary care physician if the symptoms do not remit within a reasonable period of time.
    • The PSC will temporarily not be charging late cancellation fees for sessions canceled with less than 24-hour notice due to illness
    • Therapists will contact clients as soon as possible to inform them if they need to cancel a session due to illness.
    • Recent travel and quarantines.  If you have been in any of the locations listed on the CDC’s list of travel warnings (namely, China, South Korea, Italy, Iran, Japan, and any other locations added to this list) within the past 14 days and have been asked to self-quarantine upon your return, you may not attend a session at the PSC. Additionally, if you have been quarantined due to exposure to an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19, you may not attend a session at the PSC until the quarantine period has passed and there is evidence of evaluation by a health professional. Clients are asked to notify therapists in the event they have been asked to quarantine
  • If you need to stay home, contact your therapist about providing psychological services remotely via telehealth. If you need to stay at home, the recommended self-quarantine is two weeks. There may also come a time when UNR closes the campus.
  • Should there be a disruption of care-as-usual for any reason, we will do our best to continue offering psychological services to PSC clients.
  • If that happens, contact your therapist and see if you can substitute sessions on the phone or by some other telehealth mechanism (e.g., computer).
  • If you agree that you and your therapist agree that substituting sessions on the phone or by some other telehealth mechanism is a good idea, then the procedures are below:
    • To prevent disruption to care, psychological services will be provided via telehealth using an electronic HIPPA-compliant platform called Zoom.
    • The consent form for telehealth is available at the PSC or it can be emailed to clients so that they can sign it, and send it back to the PSC via fax (PSC fax # (775) 784-1126, email, or USPS.
    • To avoid delays in the delivery of care, the PSC will accept a client’s email confirmation stating that they read and signed the form, while we wait to receive the signed copy via fax or USPS.

Please take good care of yourself and let us know if we can assist in any way.
