Materials Science & Engineering Ph.D. student Tolin Skov-Black has been awarded the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) University Nuclear Leadership Program (UNLP) fellowship. The fellowship provides $175,000 over three years to support graduate research relevant to nuclear energy and includes a summer internship at a DOE national laboratory or approved facility.
Stov-Black received his bachelor’s degree in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2019, the same year he was named the College of Engineering’s top scholar.
After serving with the U.S. Navy for five years, he returned to the University to pursue his doctorate, supported by a Graduate Dean’s Fellowship. He currently is a researcher in Professor Dev Chidambaram’s Materials and Electrochemical Research (MER) Lab.
“Tolin declined offers from several top schools to join UNR and my group last year,” Chidambaram said. He added that competition for the DOE’s UNLP fellowship is fierce, but the University’s niche strength in nuclear materials is a draw.
Six Materials Science & Engineering students have received the DOE’s UNLP fellowship over the past six years. Craig Moore and Thomas Selmi are current DOE fellows, both working in Chidambaram’s MER Lab.
