Jeremy Moon receives Powe Junior Faculty Achievement Award

Assistant Professor Jeremy Moon’s research into molten salt chemistry will get a $10,000 funding boost for 2026-27, thanks to his recent Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Achievement Award.

The award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities provides $5,000 in research funding, to be matched by $5,000 from the recipient’s institution.

“I am honored to be selected, and I appreciate the committee's confidence in me as a junior faculty member as well as their recognition of how important it is to develop tools and methods for understanding molten salt chemistry,” Moon said.

Moon plans to develop a high-temperature X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) cell that heats a thin layer of salt to a very high temperature while protecting it from air and moisture so researchers can study it using X-ray analysis. This research will improve cleaner energy technologies, like advanced reactors and batteries, by helping scientists better understand molten salts.

“I am excited to build a tool that makes a powerful experimental technique more accessible than ever, and to use it to open new research directions and deepen our understanding of the world,” Moon said.
