Ph.D. Candidate Travis Nielsen awarded Boren Fellowship

Travis Nielsen, a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of History, was awarded a highly-competitive Boren Fellowship to study Spanish and complete research in Mexico for one year.

The Boren Awards program provides U.S. undergraduate and graduate students with resources and encouragement to acquire language skills and experience in overseas locations critical to the future security and stability of the United States.

This year, 622 undergraduate students applied for the Boren Scholarship and 231 graduate students applied for the Boren Fellowship. Of those, 132 David L. Boren Scholarships were awarded to undergraduate students and 66 David L. Boren Fellowships to graduate students.

Travis received the only award given for Spanish. This is a testament to the strength of his proposed project, and to his exceptional preparation, language skills and commitment to the Boren program's mission of public service and national security. His achievement reflects both the competitiveness of the field and the high caliber of his application.

Congratulations, Travis!
