The Department of Information Systems at the College of Business is sponsoring and helping lead the 2026 Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS), bringing hundreds of researchers, educators, students and industry professionals from around the world to Reno Aug. 20-22. Several department faculty members are serving in leadership roles, helping welcome researchers, educators, students and industry leaders from around the world to Northern Nevada.
Organized by the Association for Information Systems (AIS), AMCIS is one of the largest conferences in the world focused on information systems research and practice. This year's conference centers on the theme, "The Next Transformation," exploring how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are reshaping organizations, work and society.
"We're living through a period of extraordinary transformation," said Dave Croasdell, professor of information systems and AMCIS 2026 conference co-chair. "Artificial intelligence, data and emerging technologies are reshaping organizations, industries and the way we teach, conduct research and prepare the next generation of leaders."
The theme was inspired not only by rapid advances in AI, but also by Reno's own transformation into a growing technology hub. Over the past decade, Northern Nevada has attracted major technology companies, helping drive economic growth and innovation throughout the region.
Jason Talaei, professor and chair of the department of information systems and one of the conference's program chairs, said in the AI era the information systems field is uniquely positioned to help organizations navigate these changes.
"The important questions are no longer simply, 'What can AI do?'" Talaei said. "They're also, 'How should organizations use it? What new skills will people need? And how do we make sure these transformations create real value while remaining responsible and human-centered?'"
Conference discussions will focus on topics including artificial intelligence, automation, digital platforms, analytics and data-driven innovation. Organizers expect particular interest in the evolution of AI from a tool that assists employees to systems that can participate more actively in business processes and decision-making.
Hosting AMCIS also reflects the continued growth of the University's Department of Information Systems, which has expanded its academic programs, research activity and focus on emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, business analytics and digital transformation.
For students, faculty and industry partners, the conference creates opportunities to build new collaborations, exchange ideas and engage with experts working at the forefront of technological innovation.
The conference will feature keynote speaker Missy Young, senior fellow and former chief information officer at Switch, along with research presentations, panel discussions, workshops and new participant-driven "Sparks Sessions" focused on emerging topics in the field.
"Our hope is that attendees leave Reno thinking differently about what the next transformation really means," Talaei said. "The future of AI should not simply happen to organizations and society. Researchers, educators, students and industry professionals should help shape that future and ensure that technological advancement translates into meaningful and sustainable progress."
