The University of Nevada, Reno will host a series of events in November in honor of Veterans Day, recognizing and celebrating the service and sacrifice of military members, veterans and their families. Activities include ceremonies, social gatherings and opportunities for the campus community to connect, learn and show support for those who have served.
“Veterans Week brings awareness to the diverse experiences of students, faculty and alumni who have served,” Director of Veteran Services Chai Cook said. “It helps bridge connections between the military community and the rest of campus, creating opportunities for conversation and understanding. By celebrating it together, we highlight the many ways veterans contribute to campus life and learning both inside and outside the classroom.”
The events run from Nov. 3-20 this year.
“Veterans Week gives student veterans a space to connect with each other and with the campus community,” Cook said. “The events make it easier for people to share their experiences and feel seen in a positive way. Some have also mentioned that it helps other students understand what life after service can look like, which makes the campus feel more connected overall.”
Cook’s work is vital to the vibrant and diverse Wolf Pack community. She’s worked in the department since 2012 and has served as the director since 2019.
“The most rewarding part of my work is seeing student veterans find their place on campus and realize that they truly belong here. Transitioning from military life to student life can be a big change, so it's great to watch them build confidence, connect with others and start achieving their goals. Seeing those moments, whether it's finishing a tough semester or walking across the stage at graduation, really shows why the work matters,” she said.
Simply getting involved is the best way the campus can honor veterans.
“You do not have to be a veteran to show support. Attending events, asking questions or just learning more about the veteran community makes a big difference,” she said. “Faculty and student groups can help by sharing information about veteran services and creating spaces where veterans feel welcome and included. Small efforts like that really help build a stronger, more connected campus.”
