As Older Americans Month begins, Sanford Center for Aging reflects on the profound impact of its work in enhancing the lives of seniors in Nevada. Throughout May, the organization celebrates the resilience, wisdom and contributions of older adults, and reaffirms the commitment to supporting them in living fulfilling and independent lives.

Founded with the mission to enhance the quality of life and well-being among elders through education, translational research and community outreach, Sanford Center has been a steadfast advocate for older adults in the community. Through a diverse array of programs and services, the organization addresses the unique needs and challenges faced by elders, ensuring they receive the support and resources necessary to thrive.

During Older Americans Month, Sanford Center is proud to highlight the following initiatives and accomplishments from fiscal year 2024 as the organization begins to pull data for fiscal year 2025:

  • 258 Participants in our evidence-based community wellness programs gained strength and confidence.
  • 85 clients supported with companions in our Senior Outreach Services and 65 clients in our volunteer transportation program.
  • 222 volunteers in total in all our volunteer programs gave back to the community and our local elders.
  • 122 comprehensive assessments since its launch in November 2024 and 53 separate medication reviews.
  • 1,334 OLLI members explored new ideas and connected with each other.
  • 1,286 attended our professional and community education sessions.
  • 31 students at the University of Nevada, Reno enrolled in our gerontology minor program and 15 enrolled in our certificate program to enhance their college education and better support older adults.

“Older Americans Month is a vital opportunity to share the important impact our programs make in the community for older adults and for those who care for older adults,” said Peter Reed, director of Sanford Center for Aging. “During these uncertain times, elders are coming to us for help and support and we want to be able to continue to provide this necessary service. Our work is possible thanks to support from our community and we encourage anyone to donate so we can sustain our programs.”

Throughout Older Americans Month and beyond, Sanford Center will continue its mission to empower seniors and ensure they can age with dignity, respect and joy.
