Recent graduate from the Reynolds School of Journalism Charlie Sakmar (’25) became the 24th student from the University to attain their Certificate in Principles of Public Relations (CPPR). The CPPR is awarded by the Universal Accreditation Board of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) as an entry-level certificate that distinguishes graduates as exceptional professionals with advanced skills in Public Relations.
“This is a monumental step for my professional career,” said Sakmar. “In our current job market, dominated by strong competition even in the entry-level positions, this certificate will let me stand apart from other applicants.”
During his time at the University, Sakmar originally enrolled as a mechanical engineering major but switched majors two years in when he found new purpose through the Reynolds School of Journalism’s extensive selection of courses. With the guidance of professionals like Alison Gaulden, APR, Fellow PRSA and the late Todd Felts, Ed.D, APR, alongside the hands-on experience attained through his involvement serving as treasurer for the Public Relations Student Society of America and participating in the Bateman Case Study Competition, Sakmar was awarded the Outstanding Student in Public Relations award for 2024-2025.
“This certificate will allow employers to see beyond my degree and job experience,” said Sakmar. “They’ll see my understanding of ethics, communication theories, business literacy, public relations law and more. There’s only so much an employer can glean from a degree or an internship, but this certificate proves my knowledge with certainty.”
Sakmar is looking to start a career in the travel and tourism industry. Currently, he is looking for work in Minnesota to get closer to friends and loved ones.
“It took me about five months to study for and complete the examination, but honestly I was being lazy about it. If you’re focused you can get this whole certificate done in a week. I encourage every public relations student to at least attempt it after they graduate. Future-you will thank you.”
