Elliot Parker, economics professor at the University of Nevada, Reno and College of Business associate dean of undergraduate programs and administration, and Kate Marshall, 2006-2013 Nevada State Treasurer, are the authors of a new book "Nevada's Great Recession: Looking Back, Moving Forward" released this month through University of Nevada Press.
The book focuses on the Great Recession within Nevada. It not only analyzes the economic turmoil that was endured in the past 10 years, but it also gives insight on how to prevent similar disasters within Nevada. Different components of the economy are focused on throughout the book.
Parker wrote articles throughout the Great Recession, which are included in the book. His background in doing research on the East Asian fiscal crisis helped further his expertise on the subject.
"There are nine chapters in the book, the first six are all mine, in terms of the basic structure," Parker said. "I took my columns and put them into these categories: the overall view of Nevada, higher education, the budget, what's going on at federal level, etc."
Marshall's experience in office as Nevada State Treasurer gave her a first-hand glimpse of the downward spiraling of the economy. The book includes "treasurer's vignettes," dialogue from her perspective during her time in office. The treasurer's vignettes offer a personable touch. Marshall said her and Parker believed in sharing their honest views despite the challenges that might come.
"They [the readers] may agree, they may not agree, but they would like to hear how you feel about something and why you feel that way, with no spin," Marshall said. "So in the last chapter, I really tried to say, ‘Look, this is how I view going forward. Here's where I think we are. Here's what the American people deserve.'"
Parker and Marshall, who are married, co-author the book, which can be purchased online through University of Nevada Press.
