Event boasts dynamic local and national speakers each with a big idea worth sharing

Tickets are on sale for TEDxUniversityofNevada, a speaker event set for Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016. Cost is $100 and includes more than 20 TEDx talks, a boxed lunch and refreshments. Student ticket cost is $20 but students must show a valid student ID from an area school.

New this year, TEDxUniversityofNevada has moved the program from a Friday to a Saturday with the intention of allowing more people to attend and to accommodate a more diverse audience. Also new is a change of venue for the event, which will be held at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts.

"For the past three years, this event has sold out in less than an hour," Bret Simmons, College of Business associate professor and TEDxUniversityofNevada organizer, said. "Our goal this year is to bring the University out into the community and offer those interested the opportunity to share in a day-long meaningful TEDx experience."

This year, the event has 13 local speakers, 8 non-local speakers and 5 performers: The Novelists, Jon Foreman, Lacey Sturm, The Warning, and Mark Kalin.

"This is going to be our most dynamic event yet," Simmons said. "We have a wide-range of speakers who will offer perspectives the global TED community needs to hear."

Event sponsors include The College of Business Online EMBA Program, the Associated Students of the University of Nevada, Peppermill Resort Spa Casino, University of Nevada, Reno, Microsoft and AT&T.

All TEDxUniversityofNevada talks will be posted to the TEDx YouTube site after the event.

"There's no telling how far these talks can reach," Simmons said. "TEDxUniversityofNevada talk by Logan LaPlante on Hackschooling has become one of the most popular talks ever uploaded to TEDx Talks with more than eight million views and counting."

Speaker topics will vary and the community is advised that content may not be suitable for all audiences.
