Students traveled to Silicon Valley for Voto Latino Power Summit, meeting students and leaders from across the nation

The University of Nevada, Reno's Latino Research Center worked with Voto Latino, a non-profit organization empowering Latino Millennials to develop into positive leaders, to send 20 Latino students to the fourth annual Power Summit held at Stanford University. Eighteen students from the Center's Latino Student Advisory Board and two students from the Reynolds School of Journalism were selected to attend, where they joined more than 400 young professionals all looking to claim a better future for themselves and their community.

"The Voto Latino Power Summit was a wonderful opportunity for members of the Latino Student Advisory Board to engage in leadership, advocacy, media and technology skill development," Latino Student Advisory Board President Jannet Roman said. "Seeing Latinos from around the country and from various backgrounds come together for this professional development event was extremely empowering, and allowed for us to create important networks with passionate individuals outside of our northern Nevada community."

Attendees toured the Electronic Arts (EA) headquarters, and attended a plenary and a reception featuring EA developers. Attendees heard from industry experts about leadership, advocacy, media and technology through workshops and training sessions.

Voto Latino hosted the two-day Summit with the support of EA, Microsoft, the MacArthur Foundation, Comcast, HipGive, Aids Healthcare Foundation, PG&E, Defend Our Future and Health 4 All California.

"This was a wonderful opportunity for our Latino students to learn leadership skills, network with young Latino professional from across the country and begin their involvement at a national level," Director of the Latino Research Center Emma Sepulveda said.

United by the belief that Latino issues are American issues and American issues are Latino issues, Voto Latino is dedicated to bringing new and diverse voices to develop leaders by engaging youth, media, technology and celebrities to promote positive change.
