Forum on Commission for Future of University set for Feb. 6

Commission's recommendations to be discussed at Joe Crowley Student Union Theater, 4-6 p.m.

In a letter to the campus community, Faculty Senate Chair David Zeh announced that an open forum will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 4-6 p.m. in the Joe Crowley Student Union Theater to discuss recommendations made by the Commission for the Future of the University.

Text of Zeh's letter is below.

Dear Faculty,

In advance of a Faculty Senate vote on whether to approve its recommendations, the Commission for the Future of the University of Nevada, Reno will be holding an open forum on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm in the Joe Crowley Student Union Theater. The forum will include a discussion of the Commission's recommendations for how the University can prosper in an increasingly competitive environment for higher education.

In essence, the Commission recommends that UNR's opportunity lies in emphasizing its uniqueness, which is its distinctive blend of missions and units. It is the most research-intensive institution in the state and an access institution; it is a land-grant institution that includes a medical school; it has a high quality arts and science core and excellent professional programs in business and engineering. To take advantage of this unique profile, UNR should invest its scarce resources primarily in initiatives that connect across two or more of its missions and units. By adhering to these strategic principles, over time UNR will become a more integrated, connected campus, and a regional anchor for economic and cultural development. Its distinctive profile in the higher education market will be attractive to prospective faculty and students, and this attractiveness will provide the University with the resources necessary to become an excellent twenty-first century regional university.

The Commission very much appreciates this opportunity to discuss its findings and recommendations, and we look forward to your questions, comments and suggestions.
