More than 2,600 students will move into the University of Nevada, Reno's residence halls starting Thursday, Aug. 22 in preparation for Monday's first day of classes for the 2013 fall semester.

Residence hall assignments are up by 5 percent over fall 2012. A total of 2,600 students are assigned to the residence halls this fall, compared to 2,450 assignments in fall 2012. The University's residence halls are at 115 percent of their design capacity. To meet demand, rooms in Argenta Hall remain converted from doubles to triples and Juniper Hall remains double-room occupancy versus single. As the need for on-campus housing continues to grow, the University is planning a new residence hall, which will break ground next year.

The University of Nevada, Reno's fall 2013 enrollment numbers will be finalized in September, following the "add/drop" deadline. It is anticipated to be above last fall's enrollment of 18,227 undergraduate and graduate students.

Several special events and programs are being held on campus to welcome students. The University is also encouraging the community to welcome new students by posting messages to Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #WelcometothePack.

Move-in day, Thursday, Aug. 22
8 a.m. briefing with student volunteers
Returning students serving as "Dorm Storm" volunteers help incoming freshmen move into the residence halls. At a briefing in the DownUnder Café on Artemisia Street, volunteer guidelines will be discussed and IDs will be distributed.

10 a.m. residence hall check-in begins
Residence halls officially open and move-in day check-in begins. With 2,600 students moving into the residence halls, often accompanied by family and friends, it will be a bustling scene. To streamline move-in day efforts, new students and their families are asked to park in the north parking lot and take the shuttle to the check-in tent where they will receive their parking pass and room key. After checking in, they can drive their car to their specific residence hall unloading zone where volunteers will be ready to help unload and transport items to their room.

A vendor fair located between Canada Hall and Nye Hall will include a variety of University-related clubs, organizations and vendors.

Outdoor Movie Night

After a big day of moving, students and their families can relax with an outdoor movie, "Fast and Furious 6." Attendees will sit on the lawn so make sure to bring a blanket or towel to sit on.

Campus Escort Service Begins
7 p.m., various locations
Students are now offered a new way to track their rides using a service called RideCell, available at nevada.ridecell.com. In addition to decreased wait time, the new service offers notifications when the driver is at the pick-up location and allows students to track where their van is via GPS.   

New Student Opening Ceremony, Friday, Aug. 23

The University will welcome the freshman class during the 14th Annual Opening Ceremony, which continues the traditions of singing the alma mater and reciting the Nevada Oath during a candlelight ceremony.

The ceremony includes remarks from President Marc Johnson and keynote speaker, Vincent Catalano, chemistry professor.

The University's kickoff events continue with a variety of events for students, parents, family and guests after the Opening Ceremony.

Family and guests are treated to a barbecue as the University welcomes all incoming students.

GO Fest

New students will enjoy free food and free drinks at this black light dance event where they'll get the opportunity to learn about fraternities and sororities.

Welcome Week Continues, Friday, Aug. 23 - Friday, Aug. 30
Kick it with the Pack Welcome Week, an annual week-long event series at the University of Nevada, Reno, is hosted by ASUN's department of programming, Flipside Productions, from Aug. 24 through Sept. 2. The events help welcome students to campus and encourage them to be involved with all of the opportunities it provides.
