Physicians from the University of Nevada School of Medicine are in the spotlight at the new exhibition, "Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America's Women Physicians" which is currently showing at Northwest Reno Library, 2325 Robb Drive, now through March 26. The exhibition will tell the extraordinary story of how American women who wanted to practice medicine have struggled over the past two centuries to gain access to medical education and to work in the specialty they chose.
Three School of Medicine faculty physicians will highlight the broad range of medicine that women have practiced and describe their own successful quests to become doctors.
Anton Sohn, M.D., retired chairman of pathology and founder of the History of Medicine Program will speak at the exhibit on March 5; Trudy Larson, M.D., professor of pediatrics will speak on March 12 and Cheryl Hug-English, M.D., MPH, medical director of the UNR Student Health Center will talk on March 19. All faculty talks will run from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Northwest Reno Library.
The Reno appearance of "Changing the Face of Medicine" is a collaborative effort among the Washoe County Library System, University of Nevada School of Medicine and Savitt Medical Library and features stories from a rich diversity of women physicians from around the nation. There are outstanding women physicians now found in every branch of medicine: researchers on the cutting edge of new medical discoveries, educators, surgeons, family practitioners, specialists and government medical officials.
Interactive kiosks traveling with the exhibition provide educational activities, information about medical careers, and biographies of outstanding women physicians. Audiences may also add names of their own favorite women physicians to the web site. The National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Md., and the American Library Association, Chicago, Ill., organized the traveling exhibition with support from the National Library of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health Office of Research on Women's Health, and the American Medical Women's Association. All programs are free and open to the public.
