Abstract

Mitochondria are crucial to supporting energy demands across every level of life, from single-celled organisms to humans. This energy supports neuronal signaling via neurotransmitters and neuropeptide hormones (NPHs), granting the brain and nervous system the ability to communicate. We examined mitochondria within Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly) neuroendocrine cells producing NPHs, since they are homologous to the human hypothalamus. We characterized mitochondria by quantifying subtypes, spatial distribution, and differences across brain regions. This has improved our understanding of the role mitochondria play in hormonal signaling. Neuropeptidergic systems are vast in size, distribution, and effect; this work allows us to approach new treatments for diseases and disorders.
