Research Topic: Social Media Usage and Social Comparison in Romantic Relationship Satisfaction
Abstract: Social comparison on social networking sites occurs frequently and impacts individual users’ perceptions about themselves. However, we do not know if the same can be said for users’ perceptions about their romantic relationships and overall relationship satisfaction. Via surveys of individual and their partners, this study will examine if individuals compare their own romantic relationship to other romantic relationships presented on social networking sites. We will focus on whether active or passive social media use affects these comparisons, and if comparison with others’ romantic relationships relates to their overall relationship satisfaction.
