Surface Design for Low Fire Soda
This workshop focuses on integrating surface design with wheel-thrown pottery fired in a low-fire soda kiln. Participants will learn surface-design methods including underglaze decorating, sgraffito, and mark-making techniques while addressing aesthetic issues like proportions and color theory.
About the artist

Ben Carter is an artist, educator, and podcast producer based in New Jersey. He received his BFA from Appalachian State University and his MFA from the University of Florida. His professional experience includes residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation in Montana and Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado. Ben is also the host of the Tales of a Red Clay Rambler podcast, where he interviews artists about their craft and creativity. He has authored books, including Mastering the Potter’s Wheel and The Complete Guide to Low Fire Glazes. In 2016, Ben was named Ceramic Artist of the Year by Ceramics Monthly.
