Summary

Available for Drop-in Advising on Thursday mornings

I have been an academic advisor since 2012, and I’ve been an advisor at UNR since August 2022. I earned my B.A. in Psychology with minors in Communication and English from California State University, Chico. I changed my major several times before landing on the right one for me! I considered becoming a therapist, but I also loved my jobs as an advising intern and orientation leader. I took a gap year to figure out if I wanted to pursue a career in psychotherapy or college student affairs. I accepted a job at a university close to home, so I could work while exploring my options. I ended up earning an M.A. in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Student Affairs from University of the Pacific.

I understand what it’s like to juggle work, family, and school (and sometimes feeling like I’m failing at it). I spent six years earning my bachelor’s while working 20 to 30 hours a week. I also struggled in my sophomore year, trying to take care of my family on top of work and school. At the time, I didn’t know that my university had resources that could help me with my emotional and financial hardships. My own college experience is one reason why I became an advisor—to help college students develop and reach their goals, while productively coping with hardship along the way.

I love working in higher education and being an advisor because I constantly learn from students. I also embrace my role as an advocate for students. I have been a long-time ally for queer-identifying folks, undocumented folks, and folks with disabilities (due to my personal connection with these communities), but I feel honored anytime I can use my privilege and/or power to advocate for any student who is seeking equity and inclusion throughout their college journey.

Fun Facts:

  • I have fur babies in the form of three fuzzy cats.
  • I love the wilderness and connecting with nature.
  • I binge-watch crime shows, medical shows and K-dramas.
  • I’m also an avid reader.
