Howard’s well-deserved honor

by: President Glick   from: Under My Hat

For more than 40 years, Howard Rosenberg has worked to make our campus a better place, whether it has been through the influence of his teaching as a professor of art, his electric passion for all things creative, or during his distinguished 12-year tenure as a member of the Nevada System of Higher Education’s Board of Regents. I’m convinced that if there is one phrase that perfectly sums up Howard’s daily existence, it must be his oft-quoted line that “it’s for the kids,” meaning that everything we do on our campus must always have our students in mind. Like the very best teachers we have the great fortune of knowing in our lives, Howard has that rare ability, like a method actor, to constantly channel his vast life experience into his work. He has always been a larger-than-life figure, and has harbored larger-than-life ambitions for our campus and our students. Because of these reasons and many more, it was my great pleasure last week to inform the Nevada System of Higher Education of a well-deserved honor that Howard received. Below is my message to the Regents:

“Professor of Art Howard Rosenberg was recognized last week for his contributions to the community. We all saw his deep-rooted passion for students and for education during his time as a member of the Nevada Board of Regents. This past semester he took that commitment one step further and taught an art class at Hug High School in Reno. He did so as a volunteer, teaching twice a week alongside Meredith Arp, the Hug High School art teacher who happens to be one of Professor Rosenberg’s former university students. Last week Professor Rosenberg was presented the Jefferson Award by Hug High School Principal Andy Kelly. The award is sponsored by Wells Fargo and KRNV, the local NBC affiliate, profiles each of the monthly honorees.”

The novelist Pete Dexter once noted that he believed that there are “no intact men” in this world. I humbly disagree with Mr. Dexter. Howard Rosenberg’s 42 years on our campus has been a tremendously productive and memorable time, simply because Howard cares so much about his students, the people he works with, and the community that he has served so memorably. Congratulations on a well-deserved honor, Howard.
