Dascalu receives Hoeper Award for teaching excellence

Computer Science and Engineering Professor Sergiu Dascalu has received the College of Engineering’s Ralph E. and Rose A. Hoeper Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and Advising, Engineering Dean Tom Weller announced Aug. 17. The award includes a $3,000 cash prize.

“This recognition is based on Dr. Dascalu’s strengths in classroom teaching, outside-of-class contact with students and student advisement,” Weller said. “The College is proud of his accomplishments and the positive impact he has had on our students.”

Dascalu joined the University of Nevada, Reno in 2002. His recent research focuses on human-computer interaction, applied data science, and educational technology. In the 2025-2026 academic year, he published four journal articles and 10 conference papers, including three on teaching and learning topics.

During his tenure at the University, Dascalu has been recognized as an exemplary educator. He received the 2025 Paul and Judy Bible Teaching Excellence Award, one of the University of Nevada, Reno’s highest honors. In 2011, he won the F. Donald Tibbitts Distinguished Teaching Award, and in 2019 he received the University of Nevada, Reno GSA Vada Trimble Outstanding Mentor Award.
