Civil Engineering Assistant Professor Hamed Ebrahimian, emeritus Professor Saiid Saiidi and their colleagues Masood Vahedi and Sina Zolfagharysaravi have received a Best Paper of the Year (Bridge Engineering) award from the peer-reviewed journal "Engineering Structures" for their paper “Experimental-analytical investigation of accelerated bridge construction concrete columns with self-centering Fe-SMA bars subjected to near-fault ground motions.”
Announced in April 2025, the Best Paper awards are given for papers published in 2024.
The winning paper investigated the performance of shape memory alloy made with iron (Fe-SMA) and used in a bridge column. Testing done on a shake table and corresponding computer model showed the bridge column has less leftover damage after earthquake shaking than one without. See the full Fe-SMA bridge column paper published in January 2024. See the awards announcement on the Engineering Structures Awards webpage.
