The University of Nevada, Reno School of Music is delighted to welcome a familiar and inspiring presence into a new role: Brittney May, MM, our very own alumna and longtime Reno resident has been appointed associate director of choral activities after a national search. With roots in rural Iowa and a decade of deep connection to the Northern Nevada arts scene, she brings both heart and experience to her new position, building on years of music education, performance and community engagement.

Her musical journey began at a young age, sitting on her grandmother’s lap, learning to tap out melodies on the family piano. Growing up in a home brimming with music, she was surrounded by the joyful sounds of her parents’ voices and instruments. Choir quickly became her favorite space, where music met friendship, self-expression and a sense of belonging. That early experience was shaped profoundly by her middle school choir teacher, Mrs. Lori Knuth, whose vibrant energy and dedication to her art set the model for what choral education could be: joyful and rooted in connection.

“I still believe that making music with your friends at a high-level should and can be fun,” she said. “That choir is a place where everyone belongs and each voice matters.”

After earning her bachelor’s degree in music education from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, she moved westward to pursue her master’s in music education at the University of Nevada, Reno, which was a decision that planted her firmly in Reno’s rich cultural soil. Now, ten years into her “Renoversary,” she’s built a deep and abiding love for the region: its stunning natural surroundings, its four full (but humidity-free) seasons and its warm, ever-evolving arts scene.

In the classroom and rehearsal room, she centers her teaching on care, collaboration and curiosity. Her philosophy emphasizes individualized learning within a community setting, ensuring that each student is recognized for their unique strengths and contributions. “My greatest hope is that my students find joy, satisfaction and freedom in their music-making,” she said. “I strive to create safe, collaborative spaces where they can explore their artistry while developing the musical, interpretive, social and cognitive skills needed to achieve that goal.”

Her vision for the choral program at the University of Nevada, Reno extends far beyond campus walls. She imagines a thriving, interconnected network of music-making, where local schools, professional ensembles and regional arts organizations collaborate with the University in mentorship, performance and outreach. She sees the school of music as an integral component of the Reno arts landscape, not just for not just for high-caliber artistry, but for inclusion and belonging.

“I aim to foster a welcoming environment where students from all disciplines feel invited to engage with choral music, whether as performers or audience members,” she said. “Through high-level performances and meaningful collaborations, I hope to deepen the program’s impact and visibility.”

Her return to our campus as associate director of choral activities marks not only a personal milestone, but a meaningful chapter for the University’s choral program. With her blend of musical excellence, pedagogical depth and heartfelt leadership, Brittney May is poised to help shape a new generation of singers and a more connected musical community.

Please join us in giving her a warm welcome (or welcome back) as she steps into this exciting new role!
