Find Your Pack – Ryan Costa

How a former Marine found his Pack through Veterans Services and a love of the outdoors

After high school, Ryan Costa decided to serve as a Marine in the U.S. Marine Corps. He hasn’t always been drawn to academics, but he felt a duty to serve his country and knew military service could also help him pay for college. Costa enlisted in the Marines and served for five years, stationed primarily in Okinawa, Japan. During his time there, Costa developed a passion for rock climbing and a deep appreciation of the outdoors.

When his service ended, Costa knew he wanted to pursue higher education. Originally from Kentucky, Costa has family in Reno, which is how he found out about the University of Nevada, Reno. The call of the Sierras, paired with his family ties here, made Reno a natural choice for him once he was ready to begin his studies.

Now a biology student in the College of Science, Costa is set to graduate in the spring of 2026. In his free time, he enjoys birdwatching, snowboarding, rock climbing and identifying plants – activities that connect him with nature and deepen his understanding of the natural world.

Here in Northern Nevada, he studies subjects he’s most passionate about while exploring the region’s mountains and ecosystems. Through his fieldwork and pursuits, Costa has seen the impact of invasive species firsthand. Motivated by what he’s seen, he wants to focus his career on restoration and conservation, driven by a personal sense of urgency to help protect local ecosystems.

Transitioning from military life to that of a student can be challenging. Costa has found support and a community of like-minded peers through the University’s Veterans’ and Military Center. He has found solace and community, forming meaningful relationships and receiving support, which helped him engage more with his environment and helped him to open up.

Costa has discovered his Pack here at the University and finds peace in nature, especially in the Mount Rose area and the forests around Northern Nevada.
