For professionals in the green industry, especially certified arborists, the ability to identify the types of trees in their clients' yards is an important skill to have. To help teach that skill, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension presents the Fall Tree Identification Presentation and Walk Oct. 10.

The workshop, part of the Green Industry Continuing Education Series, begins with a presentation by Certified Arborist Rod Haulenbeek from noon to 1 p.m. at the Washoe County Cooperative Extension Office, 4955 Energy Way in Reno. From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., attendees will apply what they learned with guidance from Haulenbeek during a walking tour at Dick Taylor Memorial Park, 1140 Beech St. in Reno. Attendees are encouraged to bring a clipboard, pen or pencil, walking shoes, and bottles of water, and to be prepared for fall weather.

"It's Rod's passion to teach other certified arborists how to identify local trees by leaf shape, tree structure and bark type," said Cooperative Extension Commercial Horticulture Program Coordinator Jenn Fisher, who helped coordinate the class. "Knowing which trees a client has is important, because different species have different maintenance requirements."

The class offers International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Register online at the Fall Tree Identification Walk website. For more information on classes or certification, contact Fisher at fisherj@unce.unr.edu or 775-336-0249. Persons in need of special accommodations or assistance should call at least three days prior to the class they intend to attend.
