Ambitious, University-led effort explores transportation technologies in Truckee Meadows
The University of Nevada, Reno and a coalition of partners have embarked on an ambitious effort to explore solutions for safe, clean and efficient transportation and to establish a "Living Lab" in northern Nevada. The effort - known as Intelligent Mobility - launches at a community announcement event Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Drone companies prepare to train pilots, expand opportunities
Officials with locally based Empire Unmanned will start offering classes soon through two Idaho community colleges to build a pool of pilots for the growing commercial drone industry. Western businesses using drones to provide an array of services, including imaging for precision-agriculture, say they are poised for significant expansion this season, thanks in part to the recent easing of regulations governing their pilots... Kirk Ellern's company intends to work with the Bureau of Land Management and University of Nevada, Reno researchers this spring to prove the concept, before attempting broader pilot projects.

Autonomous technology to be tested in Reno buses
Cleaning up old nuclear waste sites around the country is a long, expensive and dangerous process - and autonomous robot research at the University of Nevada, Reno promises to help that process with a combination of advanced, intelligent, autonomous aerial and ground robots with a new level of perception, navigation and planning abilities.

TEDxUniversityofNevada: Globalizing Reno's big ideas worth spreading
Reno's biggest speaker event in 2017 will take place Saturday, Jan. 21, in the Grand Theatre of the Grand Sierra Resort. In its fifth year, TEDxUniversityofNevada is an all-day event that features "ideas worth spreading" - talks, musical performances and comedy. The eight local speakers this year are Adam Kramer, Vanessa Vancour, Ashley Clift-Jennings, Albert Lee, Ashley Greenwald Tragash, Julia Picetti, Ashley Evdokimo and Ming Li Wu.

Petrified tree rings tell ancient tale of sun's behavior
The sun has been in the same routine for at least 290 million years, new research suggests... Whether the solar and tree ring cycles are connected isn't certain, says paleoclimatologist Adam Csank of the University of Nevada, Reno. Many studies suggest that it is not possible to clearly identify sunspot cycles in modern tree ring records, he notes. Other changes in Earth's climate system or periodic insect outbreaks might contribute to tree ring widths, he says.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day closures and events in the Reno area
The University of Nevada, Reno, Western Nevada College and Truckee Meadows Community College will be closed... Additionally at UNR, the Center for Student Engagement has invited students to participate in the third annual Martin Luther King Day of Service on Monday. More than 70 students signed up to volunteer for activities like with Kiwanis Bikes, Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission, Truckee Meadows Park Foundation, Food Bank of Northern Nevada and The Discovery Museum. "Students who volunteer are not only sharing their time and efforts with those in their community, but they are becoming engaged citizens in their community," Amy Koeckes, associate director of the Center for Student Engagement, said in a statement released by UNR. "And that's a major goal of the center, to help students become responsible citizens."

‘Superbug' resistant to all available antibiotics killed elderly northern Nevada woman
A Northern Nevada woman died last year from a bacterial infection resistant to all 26 antibiotics available in the U.S., highlighting the growing public health threat posed by so-called "superbugs."... The article authors, medical professionals from Washoe County, the University of Nevada, Reno, the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory and the CDC, indicated they believe she contracted the infection during a series of hospital treatments for a broken femur in India.

The last two gyms the Wolf Pack has walked into has been a no-win zone for the opponent. Both New Mexico and Wyoming were undefeated at home prior to their games against Nevada, posting a combined record of 17-0. But after shocking New Mexico in a 25-point comeback to spoil the Lobos' perfection at home, Nevada did the same thing to Wyoming, handing the Cowboys their first home defeat of the year.

The Wolf Pack baseball team has a new jersey that pays homage to the Silver State. The team debuted its "Battle Born" jerseys Monday on Twitter, posting a picture of the blue jerseys with yellow trim. The jerseys are cobalt blue, the color of the state flag, and the yellow trim comes from the outline of sagebrush color on the flag.

The Wolf Pack's strong recruiting weekend continued Sunday when Nevada picked up four more verbal commitments, including three from junior-college defensive backs. Austin Arnold, a wide receiver from Bishop Gorman; Michael Johnson, a former four-star safety from Florida; Vosean Crumbie, a former Fresno State commitment from Ventura (Calif.) College; and Brandon Brooks, a former Idaho commitment from Riverside (Calif.) City College all pledged to play for Nevada.
