The University of Nevada, Reno campus remains open and on its regular operating schedule today, Monday, March 28.
University officials remind travelers to exercise abundant caution as they travel to campus, letting the conditions in your area guide your commuting decision.
Winter weather preparedness: The University of Nevada, Reno reminds students, faculty and staff, especially those traveling to and from campus, to be prepared for winter weather.
- Know the winter terminology used by weather forecasters and regularly check the weather.
- Plan enough travel time to and from your destination. As is common in the Truckee Meadows, rain can turn into ice and snow, especially during early morning and evening rush hours.
- Ensure your tires have adequate tread, keep your gas tank at least half-full and ensure your car is ready for winter weather.
- Stock your car with winter necessities including a windshield scraper, extra hats and mittens, water and snow chains (if you don't have 4-wheel drive).
- Avoid slips and falls by wearing appropriate footwear.
- Check unr.edu for important University updates or changes to campus operations.
In response to comments the University has received on social media:
While we know it can be frustrating to wake up and realize your commute to work or school will be less than ideal, we do regularly monitor conditions and advise on winter weather preparedness. Campus closures are indeed a rare occurrence.
Since classroom space is booked throughout the day, it's not possible to delay by two hours. We would need to outright cancel early-morning classes. This can be challenging for both faculty and students, as there typically isn't a way to make up that lost time in the classroom. The University cannot add days at the end of the school year to make up the snow days or delayed starts as the academic calendar is set. Given all of these factors, the University would like to encourage all students, faculty and staff while traveling to and from campus, and during their time on campus, to be safe and to be patient during days where our campus is impacted by the weather.
