Students prepare to move into Peavine Hall, the University’s newest residence hall.

For residence hall move-in day Thursday, Aug. 20, motorists may wish to avoid using North Sierra Street, from Comstock Drive (to the north) to Ninth Street (to the south) from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

All streets around the University will be open as they normally are to two-way traffic, with the exception of the one-way Artemisia Street, which will be reverse direction for move-in day. Traffic is expected to be congested. More information about street closures to the south of campus can be found on the City of Reno website.

University officials would also like to remind students moving into the residence halls this week to come prepared with forms completed, allow extra time for parking and checking in, and to follow the move-in maps and directions. Because there is limited space around the residence halls, there is space set aside at the north end of campus. Follow the signs to the West Stadium Parking Complex, located on 16th Street, off of North Virginia Street, for free parking after unloading. University of Nevada, Reno fall classes begin Monday, Aug. 24. With the start of the new semester, motorists around the University are reminded to obey traffic laws. Some additional tips for motorists include:

  1. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks
  2. Observe stop signs and signals
  3. Don't pass other drivers who stop at crosswalks
  4. Make eye contact with pedestrians
  5. Scan sidewalks to see if pedestrians are preparing to leave the curb
  6. Observe posted speed limits
  7. No texting while driving

More information about pedestrian and campus safety can be found at www.unr.edu/police. People can also tune their radio to 1670 AM for updates from Police Services.
