Unity in Diversity: Opportunity to celebrate our differences

The annual event, set for April 10, helps campus understand the importance of diversity through shared experience

Have you ever consciously observed your surroundings while on campus? If not, I challenge you to do so. Whether you're walking to and from class or enjoying a cup of coffee at the Joe; I challenge you, to put your cellphone down and take a look around. What you will notice quite fascinating. In fact, beautiful. Different shapes, sizes, colors, much like a kaleidoscope, that with every turn and every angle, a unique picture appears different from the last.

If you haven't guessed by now, I'm talking about our students! Similar to the kaleidoscope, every University student is completely unique, creating a diverse population. Our diversity then contributes to a representation of global culture, which is one of our University's greatest assets.

Like many of our students, I too come from a unique cultural/ethnic background. Although I stem from Filipino/Spanish ancestry, I was born and raised on the beautiful island of Guam. Naturally, I was taught the importance of community through culturally indigenous Chamorro values.

The Chamorro Village night market would be the best representation of such values. From the proud and vibrant display of traditional hand-made crafts such as woven baskets and sea-shell jewelry, to cheerful crowds of people dancing the Cha' Cha' to local music, and the abundance of savory local dishes such as red rice, barbecue, and chicken kelaguen (ceviche).

These values of Island hospitality motivated by love, respect, and humility, surge across the island like a crashing wave; extending not only to locals, but to all. All are welcome to dance, break bread, and celebrate the blessings of life. Although small, Guam has an incomprehensibly large heart!

This island hospitality extends, through myself, to the University! I am just one of the many unique individuals apart of this beautiful University kaleidoscope. And as diverse as our student population is, you'll find that we all have something in common; that we belong to a community. Our community. The Wolf Pack!

This is a cause for celebration!

Operating in the interest of promoting unity through the understanding and appreciation of differences, The Graduate Student Association is proud to present our annual engagement event: Unity in Diversity 2019!

First established in 2016, Unity in Diversity provided a means for cultural exploration and exposure for all, in attempt to gain a deeper understanding of our community. Four years later, the GSA continues their mission to spread mindfulness, understanding and love throughout the community.

Attendees of UID 2019 can expect a showcase of performances by local cultural dance groups, a display of cultural attires, a diverse array of international cuisines, a speech by an honorary guest speaker, and of course, a safe space to meet new friends and colleagues while celebrating our differences. We are United!

Note: This year's Unity in Diversity event will be held on Wednesday, April 10, from 6-8 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Auditorium of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center.
