Vania Carter-Strauss, Family Nurse Practitioner and faculty at the Orvis School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Reno, recently published the peer-reviewed article, “Supporting Undocumented Nursing Students: A Narrative Review,” in Creative Nursing.

The publication examines the unique barriers undocumented students may encounter while pursuing nursing education and highlights opportunities for nursing faculty and academic institutions to better support their success. Drawing from the available literature, the article explores challenges related to access to nursing education, financial resources, clinical education, licensure, belonging and mentorship. It also provides practical recommendations for creating more informed and supportive educational environments for undocumented nursing students.

This work reflects Carter-Strauss’s ongoing scholarship focused on nursing education, student success, mentorship and improving educational environments for students from historically underserved communities. The publication contributes to an important national conversation about strengthening pathways into the nursing profession and ensuring nursing educators are prepared to support students navigating complex educational and professional barriers.
