Message from President Brian Sandoval

Racist speech or behavior—whether intended to demean, intimidate, or marginalize —stands in direct opposition to our mission and values at the University of Nevada, Reno.

February 23, 2026

The University is aware of reports circulating regarding a deeply offensive and derogatory racial term allegedly made by individuals identified as students. We want to be clear: racism, discrimination, and bias are fundamentally inconsistent with the University’s core values and our commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and supportive learning environment for all members of our community. Racist speech or behavior—whether intended to demean, intimidate, or marginalize—stands in direct opposition to our mission and values at the University of Nevada, Reno. The incident is currently under review by the appropriate University authorities.

Moments like this remind us how critical it is to be intentional about the kind of community we are building. When racist language or behavior surfaces—no matter the setting—the consequences extend far beyond the immediate moment. It causes pain, erodes trust, and undermines the sense of belonging we strive to foster at the University of Nevada, Reno.

We must also take this opportunity to reflect on what this event signals about the challenges we still face. A welcoming and inclusive campus does not happen by accident. Every person on this campus deserves to feel seen, heard, and respected, and that responsibility belongs to all of us.

Support services are available for those who need assistance. Students may access University Counseling Services, the Downing Counseling Clinic, and the Student Health Center. Faculty and staff can receive support through the Employee Assistance Program. Additionally, the University’s LiveWell Program is available to help you prioritize your well-being and navigate campus resources.

Let us move forward with renewed determination to uphold our values in both word and action.

Sincere regards,

Brian Sandoval
President
