Best Buddies received the distinction of Outstanding College Chapter in Nevada for its community impact through the state from Best Buddies. The chapter will be recognized at the Best Buddies Leadership Conference (BBLC) later this year.
“This is an awesome accomplishment,” said Taylor Hall, outgoing president of the chapter and student in speech language pathology who is entering her senior year in the fall. “This award recognizes the friendships we have fostered, the events we have hosted and the change we have made in the community.”
An international organization, Best Buddies has local chapters that provide the opportunity of one-to-one friendships, including people who identify as having a disability or as neurodiverse. Historically, individuals who identify as having a disability have been segregated in educational and work settings and even in the community. The University of Nevada, Reno chapter is one of two chapters in Northern Nevada. The other Best Buddies chapter is at Damonte Ranch High School. Las Vegas has chapters at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and most high schools.
The University chapter consists of 70 members who host monthly meetings as well as gatherings and events that bring people together.
“This award reflects not just what we have accomplished, but also the positive culture and community we continue to grow,” said Jessica Stewart, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, assistant professor in speech pathology and audiology, and at the helm as the faculty advisor. “I am especially proud of our team and members, whose passion and commitment make everything possible. Their dedication is what sets our chapter apart, and I am thankful to serve alongside such inspiring individuals.”
Best Buddies is an official club with the Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN). Members have the option to be matched with a buddy for one-to-one friendships or members can be involved in event planning, fundraising, social media, training and more.
“This distinction means a great deal to both me and our club,” said Daniella O’Gara, current president of Best Buddies and incoming senior in speech language pathology. “Receiving this recognition reflects how much we have grown in such a short time. It also gives me confidence that we will continue to expand our impact and create meaningful opportunities for friendship and inclusion in the years ahead.”
